Without question, Adam Trautman’s presence within the Saints offense has been nonexistent. However, there are always opportunities for a player to turn around their season. That might be the case for Trautman as the Saints kick off the second half of their 2021 campaign on the road against the Seahawks. While it was only a small sample size, Trautman showed a glimmer of what he could become as the tight end for New Orleans in the Week 5 matchup against Washington.
He caught two passes for 43 yards and zero touchdown scores. You never know what moments in football games will elevate players to the next level. The type of outing that Trautman had against WFT could be that moment. Currently, Trautman has six receptions for 64 yards and no touchdowns for the season so far.
His output will have to be higher after the bye week for the Saints to consider him a reliable option. There have been instances where Jameis Winston has tried to target Trautman in passing situations. The issues have been either dropped passes or him not being on the same page with Winston. New Orleans bringing back players from injuries such as Tre’Quan Smith and Michael Thomas should open up more opportunities for Trautman in the Saints offense.
The first half of the season has not been kind to New Orleans regarding being an offense that can dominate football games. Before the start of the bye week, the Saints’ plan of attack was to play solid defense, run the offense through Alvin Kamara, and maintain any lead by utilizing a conservative approach. So far, that has gotten New Orleans to where they wanted to be all along going into the bye week. The strategy was to win football games by not allowing careless mistakes along the way.
They went into the bye week with a record of 3-2, which places them above 500. With Thomas possibly being out for at least another week or two, Trautman would have a golden opportunity to establish himself as an option in the passing attack. Listed at 6’5, 253 pounds, Trautman has all attributes of being a tight end that can excel at the next level. His skillset is what prompted New Orleans to trade picks with the Minnesota Vikings in the third round of the 2020 draft.
He will have 12 opportunities to make up for what was missing in the first half of the Saints 2021 season. We will know if he will become a mainstay in a New Orleans offense that has been very good to tight ends over the years by that time.
