Black Monday 2024 is here and in full effect. As it stands right now, a total of three head coaches are without jobs. Five head coaching jobs must be filled as the offseason quickly approaches. However, they have decided not to participate in the annual period where transitions occur for many franchises regarding their most important position. According to reports, the Bears will retain Matt Eberflus as their head coach going into the 2024 campaign. Eberflus was hired by Chicago in 2022 and will head into his third season as the team’s head coach.
There were numerous rumors on whether Eberflus would keep his job going forward based on how the team performed earlier in the season. The Bears went 5-3 in their final eight games of the 2023 regular season. The defense also improved under the watch of Eberflus as well. However, their offensive coordinator, Luke Getsy, will not be a part of the team’s makeup heading into 2024.
The front office dismissed Getsy and other members of the offensive coaching staff. Members fired included quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko. Chicago’s offense showed improvement in Justin Field’s third season, in which he threw for a career-high 2,562 yards and a total of 20 touchdowns.
However, the upgrades didn’t justify retaining Getsy and the offensive staff. The firing of Getsy opens up both offensive and defensive coordinator positions on the team. NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported that although Eberflus will retain defensive playcalling duties, he’s expected to hire a true defensive coordinator.
