The Saints avoided the usual splash signings that caused social media to generate buzz on where players may be headed or departing. Instead, they are taking a more modest approach to adding new personnel to the current roster. As of now, New Orleans has signed four players who will fit into the current landscape heading into the 2024 campaign. Because of their frugal activity during the opening week of free agency, the Saints were listed at no.21 in Pro Football Network’s post-free agency power rankings poll.
“The Saints seem to be stuck in NFL purgatory. They’re pretty good, but nobody expects them to do anything special. In that sense, the franchise kind of mirrors its quarterback, Derek Carr. New Orleans needs a shot in the arm.”
Keep in mind that the Saints don’t really get active during free agency until the second and third weeks of the annual period. They’ve made a few signings in the first week, but by no means are these players house-hold names with the exception of former Chiefs linebacker Willie Gay, who signed a one-year deal on Tuesday. Nathan Peterman is only famous for his five-interception blunder that took place during his rookie season. There’s still a lot of quality free agents that are currently on the market that New Orleans can add to their roster if the price is right.
One player that comes to mind is edge rusher Chase Young, who spent the latter portion of the 2023 season with the San Francisco 49ers. The former first-round selection is scheduled to visit the Saints at a later date. Young has already met with the Saints division rival, the Carolina Panthers and will be headed to Nashville to visit the Tennessee Titans. He closed out the 2023 season with 7.5 sacks as a member of the 49ers and the Washington Commanders.
