Saints restructure the contract of wide receiver Michael Thomas

Published on

The New Orleans Saints salary cap cutting measures continue. They have been going on for the last four days. Today was no different as they restructure the deal of their star wide receiver Michael Thomas. The story was first reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.

The restructuring of the contract will create more than $8.7 million in salary-cap space for New Orleans. The Saints must get under the threshold of the league’s new salary cap number which is set at $182.5 million.

They must get under the new threshold by March 17 which is the start of the new league year. After signing a five-year $96 million extension in 2019, Thomas would go on to have one of the best seasons in NFL history by a wide receiver.

Thomas broke Marvin Harrison’s season reception record with over 149 catches and 1,725 receiving yards. Those accolades would allow him to win the league’s Offensive Player of the League Award for 2019. 2020 was an off year for Thomas as he battled numerous injuries. The All-Pro receiver finished the year with only 40 receptions, 438 receiving yards, and no touchdown scores.
