The Saints’ offense could benefit from Tommy Tremble’s skillset

Tommy Tremble

Currently, the Saints have two tight ends on the roster. Those two tight ends are Nick Vannett and Adam Trautman. Vannett signed a three-year deal with the team in March, and Trautman will be going into his second year with New Orleans. Due to the release of Jared Cook in March, Trautman is expected to become the Saints’ number one tight end once the season starts.

Vannett will assume the role that was once held by previous tight end Josh Hill. Hill was an instrumental cog within the Saints’ offense. He could become a blocking tight end in certain situations and could extend plays in the passing game. The Saints released Hill on the same day as Cook.

While both Trautman and Vannett may perform exceptionally well in their roles, there’s always room to add another dynamic to the position. Let’s take a look at Notre Dame’s tight end, Tommy Tremble. Based on a few mock drafts, Tremble is expected to be a third-round selection in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Teams that could be interested in Tremble are the Steelers, 49ers, and the Washington Football Team. Saints Discussions will provide an analyst on how Tremble’s skillet could help the team’s offense in the future. Also included will be Tremble’s scouting report by Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline.

Tommy Tremble’s Scouting Report

Positives: “Athletic tight end who flashed dominance as both a blocker and a pass catcher. Sets with a wide base, bends his knees, and possesses terrific blocking vision. Explosive at the point and knocks defenders back from the action, working through the whistle. Runs well laterally, follows the quarterback across the field, and adjusts and swipes the ball out of the air on crossing patterns.”

“Extends to make the reception away from his frame and displays strong hands with the ability to pull the fastball out of the air. Works to make himself an available target and uses his frame to shield away defenders.”

Negatives: “Used more as a rotational tight end for Notre Dame rather than a consistent starter. Must improve his route running.”

Saints Discussions Analysis

Even though Tremble may not possess the attributes of a prospect such as Kyle Pitts, his skill set would fit perfectly with a lot of teams such as the Saints. Tremble can be a better option for the Saints in the passing game compared to Vannett.

It does not hurt to have another viable option in the passing attack when it comes to the tight end position. The Notre Dame standout is not the fastest, but his ability to catch passes in various situations can extend drives.

Also, Tremble can be used as an extra layer of protection for quarterbacks Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill. According to Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline, Notre Dame average 179 rushing yards per game when Tremble was inserted into the offense.

These are the types of traits that Saints Head Coach is looking for when evaluating prospects on offense. Even though New Orleans has other pressing needs to fill during the draft, the opportunity to select Tremble could be an intriguing option for the Saints roster.
