The Jacksonville Jaguars are looking for a head coach after firing Urban Meyer after one disastrous season. The are several candidates for this job, and they may find the right one after several interviews, but one candidate stands out. That candidate is Doug Pederson.
The former Eagles head coach is a brilliant offensive mind and did an excellent job with the Eagles, including helping them win a Super Bowl.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have plenty of priorities, but the number one priority is to make sure they get Trevor Lawrence to get better and be that great prospect they drafted him to be. Doug Pederson did a solid job with Carson Wentz and would probably do better with Trevor Lawrence because he has more talent and upside than Wentz. Lawrence had an abysmal rookie season. The Jaguars will only go as far as he takes them, so he needs to get better next season.
The Jaguars need a coach the players will respect, and it is hard not to respect a coach who has won a Super Bowl trophy and did it with a backup quarterback. Pederson changed the culture in two years, which is tough to do. The Jaguars need someone who can bring a winning culture there as soon as possible.
Pederson is a coach who understands the modern NFL game. One of the big reasons the Eagles won the Super Bowl is their willingness to embrace analytics, especially when making 4th down decisions. He definitely will make sure he gets the Jaguars to give him the resources to have an excellent analytics department if he gets hired as the next head coach.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have begun interviewing coaches, and they interviewed Doug Pederson yesterday.
Pederson wants to be a head coach again badly, and Jacksonville could be the perfect spot for him.
“The competitor inside wants to continue to compete. Hopefully, I get an opportunity to lead another football team and do the same things again and learn from the last five years—what a great teaching moment for me. I always talk about how we learn from failures and different things like that. I don’t want to say that this was a failure, but at the same time, I want to learn from the last five years moving forward in my next opportunity,” explained Pederson.
The Jaguars need to get this hire right, or it could set the franchise back more than ever. Hiring Doug Pederson will get this franchise back on the right track.
