MEMPHIS, Tenn. – In yet another thrilling AAC showdown, the Memphis Tigers faced off against the UTSA Roadrunners, who approached the game as an opportunity to prove themselves against a marquee opponent. This matchup marked the Tigers’ third game in their AAC schedule, and while they had shown dominance in previous games, this encounter presented new challenges.
Memphis appeared to have plateaued in terms of consistently dominating their opponents for an entire game. They struggled to find their rhythm early on, and the Roadrunners capitalized on this opportunity. UTSA’s proficient three-point shooting in the first half allowed them to maintain a steady lead over the Tigers.
The Roadrunners connected on seven three-pointers in the first half alone, demonstrating their prowess from beyond the arc. Memphis made valiant efforts to mount scoring runs, but UTSA swiftly regained control each time. As the first half drew to a close, the Roadrunners held a slim 37-35 lead.
Entering the second half, UTSA continued their barrage of three-pointers. Despite Memphis momentarily taking the lead, UTSA’s efficiency from long range kept them in control. In fact, UTSA made 17 of 45 three-point attempts during the game. Moreover, UTSA outperformed Memphis in the turnover battle, giving the Tigers fewer opportunities to capitalize on opponents’ mistakes. UTSA turned the ball over just eight times during the game.
As seen in previous matchups, Memphis has the ability to embark on scoring streaks when they force turnovers. However, UTSA’s ball security limited this aspect of Memphis’s game. Guard Jordan Ivy-Curry was instrumental for the Roadrunners, contributing 28 points, nine rebounds, and five assists off the bench.
Despite UTSA’s remarkable efficiency from beyond the three-point line, Memphis stayed within striking distance. They used another avenue to keep the game competitive – the free-throw line. The Tigers connected on an impressive 30 of 43 free-throw attempts during the game, showing their resilience in finding ways to score.
Head coach Penny Hardaway called a timeout to strategize with the game tied at 94-94 in the closing moments. Forward Nick Jourdain had a chance to secure victory for Memphis with a three-point shot attempt, but it missed its mark, sending the game into overtime.
UTSA’s three-pointers stopped falling during the extra period, and Memphis capitalized. The Tigers emerged victorious with a final score of 107-101, extending their winning streak to nine games. Jahvon Quinerly’s crucial four-point play helped seal the win for Memphis.
Once again, David Jones led all Memphis scorers with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Quinerly finished as the second-highest scorer for Memphis with 25 points, four rebounds, and four assists.
Memphis now boasts a perfect 3-0 record in conference play, and their winning streak continues to impress. While this game presented unique challenges, the Tigers’ ability to adapt and succeed underscores their resilience and determination in the AAC. As they progress in the season, Memphis fans can look forward to more exciting matchups and the potential for a successful tournament run.
