Derrick Branch of Strike 7 Sports recently discussed the Memphis Tigers’ performance in AAC (American Athletic Conference) play for the 2023-2024 season. In his video, he shared his observations and insights into how the team has fared in conference competition.
Branch began by emphasizing that the Tigers have faced tough challenges in their AAC matchups. He pointed out that opposing teams seem to treat Memphis as a significant opponent, and as a result, they bring their best effort, essentially treating games against the Tigers like a Super Bowl.
Despite the increased pressure from opponents, Branch commended the Tigers for their resilience. He cited the game against Tulsa, where Memphis was dominant for most of the match. However, a crucial injury to Caleb Mills disrupted the team’s momentum, allowing Tulsa to make a late comeback. Still, the Tigers managed to secure the win with a game-winning three-pointer by Jahvon Quinerly.

In their second AAC game against SMU, Branch noted that Memphis struggled initially, with SMU leading comfortably. However, the Tigers fought their way back into the game during the second quarter, ultimately winning with a late three-pointer. Branch highlighted the need for Memphis to maintain a high level of performance throughout each game, as there is no margin for error in AAC play.
Branch emphasized that the Tigers must bring their A-game in every matchup because a slip-up against any AAC opponent could have consequences for their seeding in the NCAA tournament. While Memphis is steadily moving up in the rankings, Branch stressed that consistency in winning is crucial to secure a favorable tournament seed.
Branch also discussed Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology projection, which places Memphis as a fifth seed in the NCAA tournament, potentially facing Princeton as a 12th seed. He cautioned that lower-seeded teams like Princeton can pose a threat, as they often come into the tournament with a strong desire to upset higher-seeded opponents.
Looking ahead, Branch mentioned Memphis’s upcoming game against UTSA, emphasizing the importance of perimeter defense. UTSA is known for its three-point shooting, and Memphis must be prepared defensively to limit its success from beyond the arc. Branch believes that Memphis can control the game if they excel in defense and take advantage of UTSA’s defensive weaknesses.
Predicted Score: Memphis 85, UTSA 75
In conclusion, Branch encouraged Memphis Tigers fans to enjoy the journey and embrace the team’s current success. He acknowledged that the team is in a good position and that people are taking notice of their improved performance under Coach Penny Hardaway. While the Tigers face challenges in AAC play, their resilience, and ability to win close games bode well for their future prospects.
