NFL QB shuffle breakdown: Russell Wilson era over in Seattle

The NFL free agency does not start until March 16. Teams can officially negotiate with players on March 14, 2022, at noon ET. The two days before the March 16 free agency start date is called the legal tampering period. The legal tampering period is when unrestricted free agents can negotiate deals with teams that may be interested in their services.

However, the NFL did wait for the free agency period to announce the transactions on three big names at the quarterback position. Since Tuesday morning, three quarterbacks have made headlines on where they will end up playing in 2022. The first big move to start things off was four-time league Most Valuable Player Aaron Rodgers.

After months of speculation on where the former late first-rounder out of California will be playing next season, Green Bay became his preferred destination. According to CBS Sports NFL Insiders Jason La Canfora and Jonathan Jones, Rodgers signed a four-year, $200 million extension with the Packers to make him the highest-paid player in NFL history with a $50 million average annual salary. The Packers announced that Rodgers was staying put in Green Bay; the end of an era was unfolding in Seattle.

Quarterback Russell Wilson was traded to the highly talented Denver Broncos for two firsts, and second-round draft picks. Also included in the deal were Broncos tight end Noah Fant, defensive tackle Shelby Harris, and a fifth-round draft pick. On Wednesday, quarterback Carson Wentz was traded to the Washington Commanders after spending only one season with the Indianapolis Colts. Indianapolis received Washington’s third-round picks in 2022 and 2023, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The 2023 third-rounder can become a second-round selection for Indianapolis if Wentz plays 70% of Washington’s snaps.
