Meanwhile, McCaffrey has shown his versatility with the Carolina Panthers, achieving the remarkable feat of amassing 1,000 yards in rushing and receiving within the same season in 2019.
Since joining the 49ers, Christian McCaffrey has solidified his reputation as one of the premier running backs in the league. He and Alvin Kamara share a similar style of play, excelling not just in rushing but also as formidable receivers out of the backfield. McCaffrey might have a slight advantage in being the go-to running back. However, there’s a growing conversation around Kamara, with some suggesting he’s not as explosive as he once was.
There’s a belief that Alvin Kamara no longer brings the same level of dynamism to the New Orleans offense, with some saying he doesn’t attack the gaps as aggressively as before, reducing his impact. However, I see this perspective as somewhat limited. It’s essential to consider the broader context. Following Drew Brees’ retirement, the Saints struggled to regain their status as a powerhouse in the run game.
While Kamara has faced injuries, it’s partly due to the team leaning on him more heavily as a traditional running back. Starting around 2021, Kamara’s workload increased significantly, often carrying the ball between 20 and 27 times a game and accumulating over 120 yards on the ground. However, this increased usage also brought about more wear and tear, leading to more injuries for the former third-round pick from Tennessee.
McCaffrey’s success can be attributed significantly to the system he’s in, which is known for being favorable to running backs. Kyle Shanahan’s offensive scheme has a history of elevating the performance of its running backs, a legacy tracing back to players such as Terrell Davis and Mike Anderson. This system has consistently produced high-caliber running backs, with recent examples including Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson, who have excelled under Shanahan’s protégé, Mike McDaniel, in Miami. The system’s ability to maximize the talents of its running backs is a critical factor in McCaffrey’s thriving performance.
In comparing running backs, McCaffrey might have a slight advantage when running between the tackles and demonstrating more power. However, Kamara is a force to be reckoned with in his own right. When used to his full potential, Kamara ranks among the elite weapons in the NFL, comparable to Tyreek Hill and Christian McCaffrey. These players are game-changers, capable of turning the tide of a match when conditions favor their play. Additionally, it’s worth considering the impact of quarterback performance on Kamara’s effectiveness.
While not diminishing the contributions of Jameis Winston, Taysom Hill, Derek Carr, or others, the quarterback situation has influenced Kamara’s performance somewhat. The team’s current strategy has moved away from leveraging the short passing game, including effectively using screen passes to Kamara. On occasions when Kamara is utilized in this manner, the outcomes, such as Carr connecting with him for 10 to 15 catches, yielding around 56 yards receiving, don’t mirror the productivity seen with Drew Brees.
Under Brees’s leadership, Kamara typically secured seven to eight catches, amassing 88 yards receiving and 75 yards rushing, contributing to over 153 all-purpose yards. This shift highlights a change in offensive tactics that affects Kamara’s ability to influence the game as he once did.
If you utilize him as the right quarterback for the system, he can rack up 18 to 20 touchdowns because that’s what he did in his rookie year and beyond.
In the first three seasons of his career, Alvin Kamara showed exceptional talent, reaching a peak in 2020, Drew Brees’ final year, showcasing what could be considered the prime version of Kamara. However, the subsequent period has not been as impactful for Kamara, not necessarily due to a decline in his abilities but rather a lack of complementary elements in the Saints’ offensive strategy. The anticipation for how Kubiak will adjust the Saints’ offense to leverage its personnel, including Kamara, is high. While it’s unlikely to be a direct replication of the San Francisco system, which utilizes players like Deebo Samuel and Kyle Juszczyk in multifaceted roles, there’s optimism for innovative adaptations that suit the Saints’ roster. The focus remains on creating an environment where Kamara, alongside the proper support and strategic game planning, can thrive again as a pivotal offensive weapon, akin to his early career success.
