Strike 7 Elite: NFL Power Rankings 1-10
1. 49ers: 1-0
Launching to the pinnacle of our inaugural 2023 Power Rankings are the San Francisco 49ers. Their Week 1 performance wasn’t just solid—it was a statement. Taking their prowess on the road, the Niners tamed the Pittsburgh Steelers with a 30-7 victory. The day he unquestionably belonged to running back Christian McCaffrey. With a blistering 152 yards on 22 touches and a touchdown to his name, McCaffrey proved again why he’s a force to be reckoned with in Sunday’s showdown.
2. Cowboys: 1-0
The defense was the calling card in the Dallas Cowboys’ impressive 40-0 shutout win over the New York Giants. The Cowboys’ defense stifled the Giants QB Daniel Jones to only 100 yards passing, three interceptions, and was sacked seven times in the Sunday night matchup. There wasn’t much to write about regarding the offense due to how efficiently the defense performed.
3. Eagles: 1-0
Embarking on their mission to return to the Super Bowl, the Philadelphia Eagles faced a stern test on the road against the New England Patriots. In a taut affair, the Eagles won a hard-fought 25-20 win. A.J. Brown stood out among the receiving corps, hauling seven receptions for 79 yards. The game’s lone touchdown for the team was courtesy of the gifted hands of wideout DeVonta Smith.
4. Packers: 1-0
The Jordan Love era kicked off positively when the Green Bay Packers defeated their hated rival, the Chicago Bears, by a score of 38-20. The win was the Packers’ ninth straight victory over their historic rival. It’s only one game, but Love looks like he has the potential to pick up where Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers left off. The former first-round pick out of Utah State completed 15 of 27 passes for 245 yards and three touchdowns.
5. Lions: 1-0
In what could be touted as the standout victory to kick off the 2023 season, the Detroit Lions roared past the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, with a thrilling 21-20 win. While some analysts suggest the absence of Chiefs’ stalwarts Chris Jones and Travis Kelce warrants an asterisk next to the Lions’ success, it can’t overshadow the Lions’ resilience and tenacity. In the face of a daunting away crowd, Detroit’s triumph is a testament to their grit and capability on the field.
6. Dolphins: 1-0
As the people on social media would say, “Tua Tagovailoa is him.” In a back-and-forth shootout with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Dolphins left SoFi Stadium with a 36-34 victory. Tagovailoa finished the day with over 450 passing yards and three touchdowns. His teammate Tyreek Hill would also perform tremendously when he became the league’s only 200-yard receiver for Week 1. The former Chiefs star caught 11 passes for 215 yards and touchdowns.
7. Saints: 1-0
The New Orleans Saints managed to grind out a narrow 16-15 triumph over the Tennessee Titans, though it wasn’t a display for the highlight reels. The most glaring concern was the vulnerability of the Saints’ offensive line, which seemed out of sorts throughout the contest. Conversely, the Saints’ defense maintained their top-tier status from 2022, shining across the board. Their relentless pressure saw Titans’ QB Ryan Tannehill hit the turf three times, and their secondary was equally opportunistic, snatching multiple interceptions.
8. Ravens: 1-0
Baltimore soared with a commanding 25-9 win over the Texans, but the victory came at a significant cost. The relentless J.K. Dobbins, a vital cog in their ground game, faces another heart-wrenching season on the sidelines after enduring another torn ACL. While Lamar Jackson’s magic was somewhat muted, his synergy with new offensive coordinator Todd Monken appears to be a work in progress. Jackson ended the day with a modest 169 yards in the air, a pick, and found himself grounded four times by sacks. However, a bright spot emerged in rookie wideout Zay Flowers. Flowers showcased his potential in his NFL debut, snagging nine receptions for a solid 78 yards.
9. Jaguars: 1-0
Few would’ve been taken aback to learn that the Jacksonville Jaguars were bracing for a fierce contest against divisional rivals, the Indianapolis Colts. However, the Jaguars dug deep and emerged victorious, putting up a 31-21 scoreline. In a redemptive return from a season-long suspension, wide receiver Calvin Ridgley shone brightly. He racked up eight catches for 108 yards and punctuated his performance with a touchdown in the Sunday victory.
10. Chiefs: 0-1
As reigning Super Bowl champions, expectations were sky-high for the Kansas City Chiefs. However, their journey to defend the crown began on a dissonant chord. Missing star tight end Travis Kelce due to an unexpected practice injury and having DT Chris Jones sidelined over contract disputes undeniably hampered their opening display. The void left by Kelce and Jones was palpably felt in their surprising stumble against the Detroit Lions.
Equally concerning was the receiving corps’ performance, with players like Kadarius Toney letting opportunities slip through their fingers — quite literally, given the multiple drops that marred Thursday’s match-up. The Chiefs’ usually vibrant offense seemed to be in a lull. With a pivotal Week 2 face-off against the Jacksonville Jaguars looming, the Chiefs must rally, refocus, and return to the form that earned them their championship pedigree.
