In a significant offseason shakeup, LSU Tigers football head coach Brian Kelly has wasted no time changing his coaching staff. The program, known for its historic defensive units, has taken a major hit after a dismal defensive performance in the 2023 season.
The most notable moves announced by Coach Kelly include the termination of key defensive coaches: defensive coordinator Matt House, safety coach Kerry Cooks, defensive line coach Jimmy Lindsey, and cornerback coach Robert Steeples. These changes began Kelly’s efforts to rebuild and revamp the LSU Tigers’ struggling defense.
The 2023 season was one to forget for LSU football, as the team found itself ranked among the worst defenses in college football. The Tigers’ struggles on the defensive side of the ball were glaringly evident, with the team ranking 86th in points allowed and a dismal 110th in total yards allowed. For a program with a storied history of defensive excellence, these statistics were unacceptable and disappointed LSU fans and alumni.
In an official statement, Kelly stated, “I want to thank each of these coaches for their work on behalf of our football program and our institution during their time here,” Kelly said in a statement. “Decisions like these are always difficult, and we do not make them lightly, but they are made with the best interests of our program and student-athletes in mind.
“Moving forward, we will continue working to build a championship-caliber coaching staff in support of our mission to Graduate Champions.”
Despite the lackluster outings on defense, LSU finished the season with double-digit wins for the second-straight year under Coach Kelly’s tenure with the program. They closed out the season by defeating Wisconsin 35-31 in the ReliaQuest Bowl.
